Around The House/Garage

  • Store lawn and garden equipment fuel in approved containers.
  • Store pesticides, chemicals, in a safe place away from children.
  • Paints and other types of solvents should be stored in a cabinet made of metal.
  • Check all extension cords/wiring for damaged or frayed areas. Replace if necessary.
  • Inspect barbecue grills/propane and accessories before use.
  • Check rules/regulations in your area before burning yard debris.
  • Always keep at least a minimum of 100' of garden hose connected with a nozzle
  • Do not stack debris on the side of your house. Keep a safe zone of at least 10' cleared all the way around your house.
  • Check/replace smoke detector batteries twice a year.
  • Review and practice your Fire Escape Plan.
  • Check all fire extinguishers to ensure they are ready for use.
  • Check your carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed.
  • Dispose of oily, dirty, greasy rags. If you keep them, store in a metal container.
  • Keep your yard clean. Trim bushes, shrubs, etc. This removes fuel that can burn and gives your yard a nice appearance.
  • Remove stored newspapers, boxes, etc. This is fuel that will burn easily.
  • Keep areas clear of debris such as: hot water heaters, under stair cases, around doors and escape routes.

Barbecue Grills

  • All grills should be used outdoors.
  • Keep all pets and children away from the grill while in use.
  • Always stay with the grill. Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Make sure the grill is away from all structures, fences, decks, etc.
  • Keep grease trays clean and do not let the grease build up.
  • Always keep grill clean and serviced.
  • Always shut off propane tank after use.
  • Place all ashes in a metal container.
  • Always use approved lighter fluid to start the coals.
  • Once finished, place cover on the grill and close vents. Allow coals to burn Out completely.
